Dr Geoffrey Read: Orthopaedist in Johannesburg

Dr Geoffrey Read is an orthopaedist who practices from Life Brenthurst Clinic. Dr Read specialises in the branch of medicine that encompasses the treatment of musculoskeletal injuries and conditions.

Dr Read also has extensive experience in medico-legal work and is used by many major law firms in South Africa to provide medico-legal reports for their clients. Dr Read is a preferred orthopaedic surgeon for the Road Accident Fund.

As a senior lecturer and Principal orthopaedic surgeon at the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, Dr Read has trained an entire generation of orthopaedic surgeons in the skills of arthrosplasty and arthroscopic surgery.

Dr Read graduated as an orthopaedic surgeon at the University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, in 1980. During his training as an orthopaedic surgeon, Dr Read became involved in basic research related to the healing of ligaments in the knee and the behaviour of cartilage in relationship to movement.

Early in his orthopaedic career, Dr Read was one of the six founder members of the South African Arthroplasty Society. As a junior consultant, he started the Arthroplasty Unit at the Baragwanath (Chris Hani Academic) Hospital and at the same time started to develop an interest in arthroscopy and indeed was a founder member of the Arthroscopy Society some years later.

Dr Read worked as a full-time/part-time academic from 1980 until approximately 2004. During this time, Dr Read was involved in the development and design of a number of prostheses, particularly related to the hip, and was particularly involved in biomaterials. He did collaborative work with the CSIR of South Africa and Sulzer Medical research in Switzerland- this largely related to biomaterials. Dr Read was one of the pioneers in South Africa in the technology of uncemented joint replacements, particularly hip replacements.

Dr Read was also the co-introducer of arthroscopic procedures by means of fibre-optics into orthopaedics in the Johannesburg area in 1980.
It is therefore not surprising that Dr Read’s professional career has been involved in specialized joint replacement surgery of both the hip and the knee, revision surgery and more particularly specializing in joint replacement surgery in young people.

In terms of arthroscopic surgery, Dr Read has been very much involved in arthroscopic surgery even prior to 1980. Dr Read has been involved in arthroscopic surgery involving the hip, the knee, the shoulder, the ankle and the wrist.

Dr Read was involved in sports medicine and in fact was the orthopaedic surgeon who looked after the biggest single football club in South Africa for many years.
